Awakening to a New Mining Era

Guatemala has been good to gold explorers over the last decade. Discoveries such as the Marlin gold system (under development by Goldcorp) and Radius's Tambor gold system sparked an upsurge in exploration in the country.

New Laws to Access a Vast Resource Potential

Guatemala boasts an extremely favorable geological setting and vast untapped resource potential. Given the country's recent troubles, however, it's not surprising the exploration sector only began to attract foreign investment in the late 1990s. That's when new laws were introduced to stimulate the economy and attract foreign investment. The Guatemalan government made important revisions to the Mining Code. These changes eliminated all tariffs on imported mining equipment and allowed 100% foreign ownership of mining rights. For pioneering exploration companies like Radius, the new laws and incentives opened up thousands of kilometers of prospective, under-explored exploration ground.

Contributing to a Growing Economy

These important changes are finally having a lasting and beneficial effect on Guatemala's economy. Goldcorp's Marlin mine, located in the western highlands of Guatemala, produced 161,000 ounces of gold and 1.6 million ounces of silver in 2006—its first full year of production. The mine is expected to operate into 2015.

Radius, with its Tambor and Banderas projects, is one of the most active North American gold companies operating in Guatemala today.
